Movies are a favorite pastime of every person. Perhaps there would be nobody who would not appreciate movies. In this context, movie making has reached the next level. There is so much emphasis given to a well-directed film that millions of dollars get poured for their production. The most prominent award for international movies, Oscar, endorses good cinema.

This year the Oscar award for the best picture went to the movie Parasite. The South Korean movie produced by Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho depicts ill-will between two socially separate families. In this blog, we will give you a comprehensive overview of the movie while trying to understand what stands out to achieve an Oscar.

Parasite movie cast

The movie Parasite stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, and Lee Jung-eun. The movie revolves around a plot hatched by a low-income family to enter into an affluent family. The broke individuals wish to get employed by the wealthy and pose themselves as highly qualified individuals.

The families in context are the wealthy Park family and the indigent Kim. Song Kang-ho plays the father of the Kim family, and Lee Sun-kyun, father of the Park family.

Parasite movie story (spoiler alert)

The movie focuses on the Kim family – father Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, daughter Ki-jung, and son Ki-woo. The counterpart Park family are – Mr. and Mrs. Park, daughter Da-hye, and son Da-song. The movie kicks off when Min-hyuk, a friend of Ki-woo, gives the family a scholar’s rock, which fosters wealth.

Min-hyuk suggests that, when he leaves to study abroad, Ki-woo should take over his job as an English tutor to Da-hye. Ki-woo fools the Parks into believing he is a university student and gets hired as a tutor. What follows next is a saga of deception and immorality. The Kim family members start piercing into the Kim family.

Ki-taek takes over as the car driver for the Parks while Chung-sook usurps the place of the housekeeper. Ki-jung takes over as a counselor to Da-song. The movie depicts the malicious nature of the Kims, who seized positions by framing existing personnel. Ki-taek took over the driver’s job after framing the existing chauffeur while Moon-gwang, the current housekeeper, paid the price to Chung-sook.

As evident, what follows next is the endeavor of the indigents to amass money and a revelation of their plot. What makes the movie even more interesting is that Moon-gwang had a ruse of her own. Moon-gwang enters a deal with the Kims to not reveal her trick while also promising to stay silent about the Kim’s plot. Sadly, the movie ends on a somewhat tragic note, especially for the Park family.

An analysis of the movie

The movie can almost be a psychological thriller which deals with the day-to-day emotions of the people. The Kim family is practically a stereotype of the present-day penniless people. Poor people who have no access to the good things in life get oriented to a life of ill-culture. They look forward to leeching off well to do.

In comparison, the movie also shows the naivety and gullibleness of the wealthy Park family. They become too innocent and unsuspecting while hiring their employees. The film depicts the divide between the rich and the poor while emphasizing discretion, especially for the rich. When the movie ends in double murders, it is clear that desperate people do anything for money.

The movie has been called Parasite, with implications to both the rich and the poor. The poor are compared to a parasite because they always look forward to scraping from the rich. The affluent are parasites themselves because they want to live off the labor of the poor. The rich people become so lazy that they cannot clean their dishes or drive their cars.

Conclusion

The movie Parasite won accolades for the brilliant depiction of a group of sick people and vulnerable targets. The movie did not have any significant special effects, but the emotion-evoking scenes and course of play impressed the judges. This clearly shows that a good story is essential to the success of movies.
